During a recent rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, Donald Trump once again stirred controversy with his comments on how to handle rising retail crime in the U.S.

The former president floated an idea that shocked many, suggesting that police could put an end to crime with “one really violent day.” This remark drew widespread criticism, with some comparing his vision to the dystopian horror film The Purge.
In his speech, Trump painted a picture of rampant theft, where people are brazenly stealing large items like refrigerators and air conditioners, while police are supposedly powerless to act. According to Trump, this is all due to restrictions imposed by the “liberal left” who, in his words, are working to “destroy the country.” He claimed that police are afraid to do their jobs because they could lose their pensions if they intervene.

What really caught attention, though, was Trump’s suggestion that crime could be eradicated “immediately” if police were allowed to get “extraordinarily rough.” He went on to imagine a scenario where one particularly harsh day of law enforcement would spread the message and stop crime in its tracks. “The word will get out and it will end immediately,” he said.

As expected, social media lit up with reactions, many of which pointed out the eerie similarities between Trump’s vision and the plot of The Purge, a movie where crime, including murder, is legalized for 12 hours each year to maintain social order. Jon Lemire, a host on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, called Trump’s rhetoric “deeply dangerous,” noting that it sounds like the fictional purge scenario and could inspire violence, similar to the events of January 6th.

A campaign spokesperson claimed Trump’s comments were made “in jest” and that he was simply reiterating his stance as a “law-and-order” candidate.

However, for many, the damage was already done. Critics pointed to Trump’s history of advocating for harsh punishments and his polarizing comments on crime, suggesting that these types of remarks only fuel dangerous ideologies.
