Extravagant, Luxurious, and Disturbing: The Enigma of Illuminati Parties

Who could forget Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film Eyes Wide Shut? In it, Tom Cruise plays a well-to-do New York doctor, a bored family man who, due to unexpected circumstances, finds himself at a mysterious party that changes his life—an alleged Illuminati gathering.

While much has been speculated about these meetings or rituals, the truth remains shrouded in secrecy, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction.

The Illuminati Parties: A Secret Society

The Illuminati theory is the queen of conspiracy theories today, yet some of these assumptions are grounded in documented history. For instance, Adam Parfrey, founder of Feral House publishing, explores these ideas in his book Ritual America, which draws from The Cyclopaedia of Fraternities by Albert C. Stevens.

Written in 1899, Stevens’ work compiles research on the origins, founders, development, and members of more than six hundred secret societies in the United States.

On the night of May 1, 1776, the first Illuminati gathered to found their order in a forest near Ingolstadt, Germany. Bathed in torchlight, five men established the rules that would govern the society.

Membership required unanimous consent from current members, a strong reputation, established family and social connections, and wealth. Initially, the order had three levels: novices, minervals, and illuminated minervals. The term “minerval” referred to Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, reflecting the society’s goal of spreading true knowledge—or “illumination”—about how society and the state could be reshaped.

Over the years, the Illuminati grew in size and diversity, possibly reaching 600 members by 1782. These included prominent figures in Bavarian public life, such as Baron Adolph von Knigge. Initially, the Illuminati were limited to the students of founder Adam Weishaupt, but membership later expanded to include noblemen, politicians, doctors, lawyers, jurists, intellectuals, and leading writers, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. By 1784, the Illuminati had grown to between 2,000 and 3,000 members.

The Rothschilds: Surreal Hosts For the Biggest Elite Party

On December 12, 1972, Guy and Marie-Hélène de Rothschild, members of a powerful European banking dynasty, hosted a party at their palace in Paris that would go down in history.

Its bizarre and sophisticated headpieces, many of which were designed by Salvador Dalí himself were the main attraction. The banquet tables featured centerpieces made of broken baby dolls and mannequins of naked women.

Only the crème de la crème of Parisian society received invitations to the event, which came with a peculiar twist: the attendance instructions could only be read by reflecting the card in a mirror.

The dress code was “black tie, long dresses, and surreal headpieces.” The event took place at the Château de Ferrières, located 26 kilometers east of Paris. The exterior of the château was illuminated in orange and red, leading many to associate it with the flames of hell.

Celebrities like Grace Kelly, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvador Dalí, Brigitte Bardot, and Audrey Hepburn were among the attendees.

Of course, let’s not forget dinner, where plates were covered in fur, there were tables decorated with taxidermied tortoises and food served on a mannequin corpse on a bed of roses and doll parts all around the table.

Omnilingual cannibalistic puns littered the menu, like “sir-loin” here, “extra-lucid” soup and goat’s cheese roasted in “post-coital sadness”.

The event became one of the most extravagant of 20th-century high society, sparking countless theories about the Illuminati and inspiring pop culture, including Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.

Three years after their unrepeatable Surrealist Ball, the Rothschilds donated the chateau to the chancellery of the universities of Paris (now a gastronomic school) and moved to the house they had built in its woods.

The Illuminati Ball: An Immersive Experience

In recent years, an immersive theatrical experience called The Illuminati Ball has gained popularity. Undercover reporters witnessed this experience at a lush estate in the Connecticut woods. Tickets for the event, written and directed by artist Cynthia Von Buhler, cost $450. Von Buhler, known for her work in various mediums, draws inspiration from the absurd and surreal.

According to Sarah Jacobs, a reporter for Business Insider, the experience included limousine transportation, lavish banquets, milk baths, swimming pools, dancers, acrobats, and other secret activities. When purchasing tickets, guests were asked to identify themselves as a pig, monkey, mouse, cow, or chicken—each animal representing different personality traits that would define the guest’s identity for the night.

Von Buhler’s event was largely inspired by Marie-Hélène de Rothschild’s 1972 dinner, with leaked photos showing the celebrities and guests dressed in elaborate, surreal attire.

Mrs. Rothschild herself greeted guests wearing a white dress and a deer’s head with diamond tears. Conspiracy theorists have long connected this event to the Illuminati, citing the dismembered dolls on dining tables as symbolic of human sacrifice.

The castle’s exterior was lit in bright red, supposedly representing satanic rituals that were said to have taken place inside. These same decorations were replicated for Von Buhler’s ball.

The ritualistic event began with guests being blindfolded, instructed not to reveal anything that happened that night, and having their phones collected. After a one-hour limousine ride, attendees were welcomed by the Pig King and his spouse at Von Buhler’s extravagant country house, where taxidermy covered the walls and her art adorned several rooms.

As part of the immersive theater show, the hosts adapted to the dozen or so attendees, who interrupted their dinner to discuss human sacrifices and make decisions about loyalty. Later in the evening, all the participants ended up in the pool, fully nude. According to Business Insider, this was one of host Cynthia Von Buhler’s favorite nights.

Reality or Fantasy?

While The Illuminati Ball was not an authentic Illuminati experience, it offers a glimpse into the kind of surreal and unsettling events that might occur behind closed doors in the lodges of secret societies. Whether rooted in truth or the product of imaginative minds, the allure of the Illuminati continues to captivate and disturb in equal measure.
