Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón became the first openly transgender woman to be nominated in a film category at the Golden Globes, a milestone announced on Monday, Dec. 9.
Gascón’s nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy places her alongside industry heavyweights Amy Adams (Nightbitch), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Zendaya (Challengers).
This recognition follows her recent win at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where she shared the Best Actress prize with her Emilia Pérez co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz.
Karla Sofia Gascón’s Portrayal in Emilia Pérez
In Emilia Pérez, Gascón plays Manitas, a feared Mexican cartel leader who hires lawyer Rita (played by Saldaña) to help him transition into living as a woman named Emilia Pérez.
Years later, Emilia faces new challenges as she attempts to reunite with the family she left behind. The film’s narrative balances crime, comedy, and drama, paving the way for nuanced transgender representation in mainstream cinema.
Directed and co-written by Jacques Audiard, Emilia Pérez has been lauded for its bold storytelling and vibrant musical numbers. The film, inspired by Boris Razon’s novel Écoute, builds on a brief mention of a transgender character in the book, crafting a compelling story centered on identity, redemption, and transformation.

The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to an 11-minute standing ovation that moved its cast to tears. With 10 Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Director, the film has established itself as a critical darling and a cultural phenomenon.
Speaking to PEOPLE at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Gascón shared her gratitude for the recognition. “For me, I don’t know. What can I say? It is amazing for me”
Of course, this nomination is a significant moment for trans representation in the entertainment industry. While Mj Rodriguez made history in 2022 as the first transgender actress to win a Golden Globe for her role in Pose, Gascón’s nod in a film category highlights the growing opportunities for transgender performers to take center stage in diverse and complex roles.

The film’s soundtrack, composed by French musician Clément Ducol, features a mix of heartfelt ballads and witty show tunes that enhance its emotional depth. Ducol, known for his work on The Little Prince (2015), brings a unique musicality that elevates Emilia Pérez to unforgettable heights.
Don’t miss the Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 5, airing live at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+.
