Born on March 17, 1997, in Washington, D.C., Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky showed an early affinity for the water. She began swimming at the age of six, inspired by her older brother, Michael. Under the guidance of her first coach, Yuri Suguiyama, Ledecky quickly showcased her potential, setting national age group records.
Ledecky’s breakout moment came at the 2012 London Olympics, where, at just 15 years old, she stunned the world by winning gold in the 800-meter freestyle. Her victory was not only unexpected but also marked the beginning of a new era in women’s distance swimming.

At Tokyo 2020, held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ledecky added to her impressive medal tally. She won gold in the 800m freestyle and the newly introduced 1500m freestyle, and silver in the 400m freestyle.
Stay tuned for more thrilling performances from Ledecky in the 4x200m freestyle relay and the 800m freestyle events later in the Paris Olympics!
