“Many believe that the book incites harassment, bullying and hatred towards Payne, as they believe everything cited in it, affecting her mental and emotional health to the point of having fatal consequences due to her recent, unfortunate and tragic death,” the creator writes.
This phenomenon isn’t new to psychology. In fact, psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton coined the term “reality control” to describe how certain groups or leaders manipulate their followers’ perception of reality. This control molds a version of events exclusive to the group, dismissing or distorting any fact that contradicts their idealized narrative.
Applied to Liam Payne’s fans, this “reality control” could be pushing them to see the singer as an infallible, untouchable figure, blinding them to the real-life conflicts he faced. More than honoring his memory, this type of idolization dehumanizes the artist, crafting a flawless icon instead of remembering the complex person he was— and that’s a dangerous error.
