Do you remember Pride and Prejudice? The early 2000s romance film adapted from Jane Austen’s novel of the same name, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen?
That film showcased the brilliance of male characters written by women, and even now, almost 20 years later, it’s still a fan favorite—except for one person: its leading man.

Matthew Macfadyen Reveals What He Hated About Playing Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice
Directed by Joe Wright, this 2005 film introduced us to Mr. Darcy (played by Matthew Macfadyen) and Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley), two people from completely different worlds who are destined to be together. To find true love, they must overcome their pride and set aside their prejudices.

Matthew Macfadyen’s portrayal of Mr. Darcy made many people fall in love with the character. His performance is praised for its emotional depth, showing a man who is both proud and vulnerable

However, nearly 20 years after the film’s release, Matthew Macfadyen has admitted that he didn’t enjoy playing the character as much as people might think. In fact, he even questioned if he was the right person for the role.
“There were times when I had a good time, but I wish I had enjoyed it more. I wish I had been less worried about it,” he said in an interview with CBS. He added, “Maybe I felt a little out of place. I’m not attractive enough. But it worked.”
Despite his reservations, the film was a box office success, and over time, Matthew Macfadyen has cemented his reputation as one of the best actors of his generation. He has since starred in other notable productions like Succession on Max and Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine.
