The trailer for “Back to Black,” the biographical film about Amy Winehouse, has stirred emotional reactions on social media shortly after its release.
Amy Winehouse passed away 12 years ago due to accidental alcohol poisoning, and her shocking death is still talked about as she suffered from emotional and psychological abuse, which led to substance abuse and ultimately, her death.
Users on social media didn’t like how Amy was portrayed, neither physically nor in the voice of actress Marisa Abela.
Additionally, the conversation became more serious after people stated that Winehouse’s father was involved in the movie, even though her relationship with him has been publicly tumultuous. The movie will also show Amy’s heartbreak and how it influenced the creation of the singer’s final album.
@sillyswampcreature79 Amys whole voice was jazzy and soulful. This movie is a big MISS! It doesnt even sound like they tried to make it sound like her, and it definitely doesnt look like her either. They missed so many parts of her life in it from what ive heard, and there are good documentaries to watch instead. This is so disrespectful to her. #amywinehouse #backtoblack #backtoblackfilm #amyamyamy #amywinehousebacktoblack #lioness #jazztok #soulmusic #blueeyedsoul #rnb #funk #neosoul #neofunk #jazzmusic #jazz #loveisalosinggame #ripamywinehouse ♬ original sound – Amy Jade Winehouse
“It’s so disrespectful that it almost even feels intentional to take from her legacy” can be read in the comments. “It honestly prob was from her dad unfortunately” replies the author.
This is not the first time a film is made of the iconic UK singer. ‘Amy’ by Asif Kapadia premiered on 2015 and won Oscar’s best Documentary Film. The documentary shows the raw story about Amy’s rocketship to stardom, and her struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, relationships, and body image.
It also depicts how Amy’s father, Mitch, split with Amy’s mother when the singer was a child, and reappeared in her life when she started becoming famous. Then, when she was dealing with alcohol and substance abuse, he pushed her into doing concerts despite her physical and mental condition. Also, he was in the eye of the hurricane when he filmed Amy’s funeral. Damn.
The casting isn’t that bad and isn’t the problem I have with this Amy Winehouse biopic. It’s her dad being involved. He was actively participating in exploiting Amy when she was alive. I’m sure all of it will be whitewashed to make sure he’s portrayed as this good supportive dad. pic.twitter.com/DVdsWQS8wx
