Pose star Billy Porter will reportedly play Cinderella’s fairy godmother in Sony’s upcoming live-action Cinderella. The newest Cinderella is set to be a modern musical take on the classic fairytale, conceptualized by James Corden, the Carpool Karaoke host, and Kay Cannon, who has worked on the Pitch Perfect movies.
Camila Cabello has been announced to play the leading role as Cinderella, and will also contribute to the film’s music. Billy and Camila are the only confirmed cast members for the film, and there is still no confirmed release date yet. Still, the news is exciting and we still can’t wait for Porter’s appearance as the fairy godmother!

The actor has been generating a lot of buzz this year, starting with the gown he wore at the 2019 Academy Awards: a full-skirted, strapless black velvet gown with a tailored tuxedo jacket, designed by Christian Siriano, a Project Runway winner and diversity advocate. His fashion statement was a clear clapback at traditional masculinity standards, which he says was a moment of liberation for him.
Porter is very open about his love of fashion, especially how clothes are a way of finding representation and self-expression. His outfit for the 91st Academy Awards said, “This is what queer looks like. This is what unapologetically fabulous looks like”. His outfit was a groundbreaking moment in the Oscar’s red carpet history, and states that “What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part” (Vogue).

In the press room after his Emmy win last month, Porter told reporters that representation in media has “the power to create empathy.” He also said that “young queer people of all colors can look at me and know that they can.” (People) The actor shared the news via the New Yorker’s Instagram Stories. “I have a couple movies that I’m working on,” Billy said. “I’m gonna be playing the fairy godmother in the new Cinderella movie with Camila Cabello” (Vogue).

His influence in the LGBTQ+ community has been huge, especially after he became the first openly gay African-American man to win an Emmy for his lead role in a drama on Pose (2018), after previously receiving a Tony Award and a Grammy. Now, he will be playing a ‘women’s’ role in the new Cinderella, bringing more queer and black representation to the big screen, which is very exciting.
