Space movies are about to become more real thanks to a new film studio located, literally, outside of this world. A company has announced that it plans to open a module in the commercial wing of the International Space Station (ISS) to host films, television, music, and even sports events all in a zero-gravity arena.

Space Entertainment Enterprise (SEE) said in a statement that it plans to complete the installation of a module named SEE-1 in a dock called Axiom Station, the commercial wing of the ISS, by December 2024.

What is more interesting is that this company is co-producing Tom Cruise0s forthcoming space film and plans to create more content on their own in the new out of space facilities.

SEE will let third-party providers use the facilities even though on-site audience capacity is still to be determined. There, content creators will be able to develop, produce, record, broadcast, and livestream 250 miles above Earth.

“SEE-1 is an incredible opportunity for humanity to move into a different realm and start an exciting new chapter in space,” said SEE co-founders Dmitry and Elena Lesnevsky.

Movies filmed in outer space

Axiom has already produced a movie in the ISS called The Challenge. It was made by a Russian film crew that flew in October 2021 for a 12-day shoot and is planned to be released by the end of this year.

The company plans to send Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman to space this year to produce the second movie shot in space. Although everyday scenes from astronauts have been released, until now fiction films have had little to no opportunity in outer space.
