Godzilla, like almost every other monster in the history of science fiction, was not meant to be the bad guy. Their circumstances, caused mainly by humankind, are what turn these creatures into the deadly and fearsome characters of the history of cinema and literature. They are just trying to defend themselves from humans who believe the monsters are destroying the Earth, when in fact, they are in this world because of humans playing with science and technology.
But what would happen if Godzilla were here to save us? Well, that is one of the things that could happen in the new movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
The new trailer has just been released and it shows impressive visual effects of the battle between Godzilla and other monsters, such as King Ghidorah, a three-headed beast, the insect Mothra, and a flying monster called Rodan.
The film, directed by Michael Dougherty, features Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, and Ken Watanabe, who plays Dr. Ichiro Serizawa and is the only one in the cast who was in the previous Godzilla from 2014.
I love Godzilla because of the dualities it portrays, sometimes as a hero defending humans from destruction by other monsters, and others, destroying entire cities in a journey to save the ones who often believe it is a horrendous monster. It is such an incredible character from Japanese pop culture that it has become timeless. It first appeared in 1954 as Gojira, and since then, not only there have been several Japanese movies, and Hollywood has also found in this Kaiju a character that brings thousands of dollars to the box office.

Its villain counterpart, King Ghidorah also comes from the original Japanese saga. Its first appearance was in 1964, and it seems like this new movie follows in the old plot in a way, with the other two monsters teaming up with Godzilla to destroy the three-headed beast.
As a fun fact, some scenes in Godzilla were filmed in Mexico City’s downtown in 2017. Hundreds of extras participated, running down the streets in an attempt to save themselves from the flying monster’s destruction.

This film will definitely show why Godzilla is not only one of the most beloved science fiction characters in popular culture, but also, as the title of the movie says, the King of the Monsters. Oh, wait a minute… we’ll have a legendary battle between Godzilla and Kong in 2020. But nevermind, Godzilla will always be the King.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released on May 31st, 2019.
