A few days ago, we were given the sad news that Haydn Gwynne passed away at 66 after being diagnosed with cancer. “It is with great sadness that we share that, following her recent cancer diagnosis, star of stage and screen Haydn Gwynne passed away in hospital in the early hours of Friday morning, October 20, surrounded by her beloved children, family, and close friends,” her agent posted on social media.
Although she is best known for her role as Lady Susan Hussey, the late queen’s maid of honor, in the fifth season of The Crown, Haydn Gwynne had an immense and distinguished career in film, television, and theater.
Who Was Haydn Gwynne?
Haydn was born in October 1957, in West Sussex, and before entering the world of acting, she completed a degree in sociology at the University of Nottingham. However, acting was something that had always appealed to her, so she went on to study theater and then taught English at the University of Rome.
It was in the 80s that she made her debut as an actress, in Nice Work, but her greatest success was when she played the journalist in Drop the Dead Donkey, a role that earned her a BAFTA nomination in 1992. In addition, Gwynne also competed for a Tony Award, thanks to her performance in Billy Elliot the Musical, without forgetting that she was also recognized for City of Angels, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and The Threepenny Opera.
