Netflix gave us the first trailer of Maestro, a film directed by and starring Bradley Cooper where he gives us a touching portrait of love and family. The film, produced by Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, uses the life of composer, pianist, and orchestra conductor Leonard Bernstein as a pretext to tell the story of his relationship with Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein.
Bernstein’s love life was marked by complexities. He married his great love, played by actress Carey Mulligan, in 1951, and they had three children: Jamie, Alexander, and Nina. Felicia became central to Bernstein’s life, so much so that their relationship was described as a union of complementary personalities. While he was known for his energy and charisma on stage, she brought a calmer, more comforting presence to his personal life.

Throughout his life, the composer had extramarital and homosexual relationships. One of Bernstein’s best-known ties was his friendship and intimate relationship with pianist and composer David Diamond. It is believed that they rather had a bond of love and intimacy.
Another important figure in Bernstein’s life was Tom Cothran, a younger man he met in the late 1970s. The two shared a close friendship, and Cothran was considered the director’s personal assistant for a time. They even claimed that their relationship went beyond work. Sometime later, when he separated from Felicia, she was diagnosed with lung cancer, so he returned to care for her until her death on June 16, 1978.
