In 2004, Mean Girls came into our lives to never leave, becoming an instant classic, and the reason why the world is painted pink on a specific day. The celebration happens every October 3rd, and curiously it has nothing to do with the premiere of the movie directed by Mark Waters.
What Is Mean Girls All About?
Before explaining this tradition in detail, let’s remember what the film starring Lindsay Lohan is about. The movie is a teen comedy about high school life and the conflicts between popular and unpopular groups of girls.
The story follows Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), a young woman who has lived most of her life in Africa and suddenly moves to a suburb in Illinois. When she begins attending high school, she finds herself caught up in a struggle for popularity and rivalry between different groups of girls.
With the help of her new friends Janis Ian (played by Lizzy Caplan) and Damien (played by Daniel Franzese), Cady tries to navigate the complex social dynamics of the school.
The school’s most popular group is led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), a manipulative and malicious girl. Cady first poses as a friend to Regina and her clan, but eventually becomes a rival when she tries to sabotage her popularity. The film explores themes of friendship, loyalty, identity, and the price of conformity to social norms.
What Do We Celebrate on October 3rd?
Anyone who has seen Mean Girls knows that October 3 is the day Aaron Samuels, (Jonathan Bennett) asked Cady an important question, “What day is it today?” This was Cady’s first interaction with her crush, and the first time she had a pretext to look at him and talk to him. “It’s October 3rd!” Obviously, it’s a great moment to immortalize.
And Then, Why Do We Wear Pink?
One of the main rules the Plastics have is that on Wednesdays everybody wears pink. For fans, it doesn’t matter much if it falls on a Wednesday or not, October 3rd is Mean Girls Day, and we all wear pink, so let’s get the best outfits out of the closet to join the celebration.
