A cultural association in India demanded the removal of one of Oppenheimer’s scenes where, allegedly, a couple is seen reciting a verse from a Hindu sacred text while having intercourse.
“We don’t know the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene in the life of a scientist. It is a direct attack on the religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus, and is tantamount to waging a war against the Hindu community,” a letter from the Government of India’s information officer, Uday Mahurkar, and the ‘Save the Culture, Save India’ foundation stated.
It also demands that director Christopher Nolan and the Central Board of Film Certification of India do everything necessary to “uphold the divinity of his revered book and remove this scene from the film worldwide.” The scene shows, according to Mahurkar, a woman forcing theoretical physicist Oppenheimer to recite a verse from the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text while having intercourse.
Has the Scene Already Been Deleted?
Yes, this scene was removed before its release to reduce its length, as they did not think the censorship board would allow it to be broadcast in its entirety. Nolan’s film was classified as ‘Restricted,’ which means that it contains sensitive and adult content, so minors could not consume the film.
