The nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards, which will be held in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 9th, were announced earlier this morning by John Cho and Issa Rae. As was predicted, there were few surprises, with Joker and The Irishman leading the nominations, but there were a few unexpected snubs, such as Jennifer Lopez’s performance in Hustlers and Adam Sandler’s in Uncut Gems.
Overall, the nominations have been received with a certain amount of backlash (starting with Issa Rae’s “congratulations to those men” quip during the live announcement, referring to the lack of female directors nominated) due to the overwhelming number of white and male nominees in most categories; it is important to note that Cynthia Erivo is the only person of color nominated in any of the acting categories.
It will be interesting to see if any of the celebrities attending on that day will comment on this unfortunate reprise of #OscarsSoWhite, and if the moviegoing public will excited enough to tune in for the ceremony on February 9th.
