The awards season wraps up on March 10th, when the red carpet rolls out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California for the Oscars, the biggest and most famous film industry award honoring the best of the past year. Barbenheimer, the internet sensation that took cinemas worldwide by storm, is set to go head-to-head against Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer this Sunday.

Both films, released on July 21, 2023, drew massive crowds to theaters, reminiscent of pre-Covid-19 times. Despite their stark differences, both movies captivated massive audiences. Barbie brought one of the world’s most famous dolls to life and sparked public debate on various topics related to the toy’s image in society and feminism. Notably, neither Margot Robbie, who stars in the film, nor the director, received nominations in their respective Oscar categories. In contrast, Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons, ushering in the atomic age during World War II.

In the 96th edition of the Academy Awards, Oppenheimer boasts 13 nominations, including major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor, while Barbie competes in eight categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. According to the film platform Filmaffinity, Barbie has competed in 17 award shows, winning 14 accolades, including 2 Golden Globes and 6 Critics Choice Awards.
Conversely, Oppenheimer has participated in 17 ceremonies, securing 34 awards, including 5 Golden Globes, 7 BAFTA Awards, 3 Guild Awards, and 8 Critics Choice Awards, among others. At present, Christopher Nolan’s film leads the pack and is considered by critics as the frontrunner for the most coveted prizes at the Oscars. The truth will be revealed this Sunday.
