Just as Black History Month came to a close, Paul Tazewell achieved something unexpected but deeply desired: a historic win at the 2025 Academy Awards. His victory wasn’t just a personal milestone—it was a moment that changed history forever.

Paul Tazewell The First Black Man to Win Best Costume Design at the Oscars

Paul Tazewell is no stranger to the spotlight. A celebrated costume designer with an extensive career in theater, television, and film, he has already made his mark with a Tony Award for Hamilton and an Emmy Award for The Wiz Live!.

For Wicked, Tazewell took on the massive challenge of designing over a thousand costumes, bringing the magical world of Oz to life. His intricate work included Glinda’s iconic bubble dress and Elphaba’s striking black gown.

Inspired by the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, he infused his designs with unique textures like felted fabric, gauze, and chiffon, elevating the visual storytelling of the film.

Despite the rich history of Black excellence in the film industry, no Black man had ever won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design—until now. Tazewell’s victory is a groundbreaking moment in Oscar history, marking a significant step forward for diversity in film. He follows in the footsteps of Ruth E. Carter, the only other Black person to win in this category for her legendary work on Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Paul’s Extraordinary Career

Paul Tazewell’s journey to this historic moment began long before the Oscars. Born on September 15, 1964, in Akron, Ohio, he discovered his passion for costume design while working on school productions. Initially aspiring to be an actor, he eventually shifted his focus to design, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1986 and later a Master of Fine Arts from New York University.

His Broadway debut came in 1996 with Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk, and from there, his career soared. He designed costumes for The Color Purple, In the Heights, Memphis, A Streetcar Named Desire, Ain’t Too Proud, MJ, and Suffs, earning multiple prestigious awards along the way.
