Russia Offers Elon Musk Asylum—And No, This Is Not a Cold War Parody

A Russian official says Musk is welcome to defect. It’s trolling, sure—but it also exposes just how messy American power has become.

Russia is offering Elon Musk political asylum.

Yes, that Elon Musk. And yes, that Russia.

In a move that would feel like on-the-nose satire if it weren’t entirely real, a senior Russian official suggested that if Musk needs protection from Donald Trump, the Kremlin is happy to provide it. Dmitry Novikov of Russia’s State Duma said the billionaire,

“has a completely different game” going on—but if it ever came to it, “Russia, of course, could provide asylum.”

It’s an eyebrow-raising moment. And also—let’s be honest—an absolute troll.

But it’s a strategic one. The offer arrives during an escalating feud between Musk and Trump, which has moved from subtle shade to full-on scorched-earth warfare. What started with disagreements over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” (a Frankenstein tax-and-spending plan) quickly unraveled into Musk calling for Trump’s impeachment and accusing him of being named in the Epstein files.

You could write this off as another episode in America’s never-ending circus. But then Russia stepped in—because of course they did.

Elon Musk vs. Trump Becomes Russia’s Favorite Spectacle

Novikov’s offer wasn’t just a PR stunt. It was a calculated moment of information warfare. Russia doesn’t want Musk. They want the headlines. They want the clips on Telegram. They want the image of a crumbling U.S. elite devouring itself—and the world’s richest man suddenly being courted by the Kremlin.

In the middle of stalled Ukraine ceasefire talks, this kind of symbolic flex matters. It’s psychological ops dressed in diplomatic politeness. And Musk, who thrives on chaos and contradiction, is the perfect tool—willing or not.

Adding fuel to the fire, former Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin (now leading a Russian military unit in occupied Ukraine) invited Musk to join his battalion, promising “reliable comrades and complete freedom of technical creativity.”

That’s not just trolling. That’s a country winking as it weaponizes absurdity.

Meanwhile, Musk Is Burning What’s Left of the Bridge

On his platform X, Musk has gone scorched-earth. After Trump accused him of being bitter over the loss of EV mandates, Musk claimed credit for Trump’s 2020 win and then dropped the Epstein bombshell.

“Time to drop the really big bomb: Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,” Musk posted Thursday.
“Have a nice day, DJT.”

No evidence has been produced. But the mere accusation shattered whatever political alliance remained between them. And it handed Russia the perfect excuse to grab popcorn—and a microphone.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, sounding almost maternal, called it an “unfortunate episode from Elon” and said the president is focused on making the country “great again.” Meanwhile, Musk is tweeting about impeachment and quoting Cold War memes in between posts about Starlink and lab-grown meat.

This Isn’t About Musk. It’s About What America Has Become

Russia doesn’t actually expect Musk to show up in Moscow in a Tesla. This isn’t really about him. It’s about the optics of American collapse, the symbolism of a tech titan being disowned by the president and welcomed by Putin.

This is what it looks like when empire eats itself in public—when propaganda no longer needs to invent enemies because reality is strange enough.

Elon Musk might be the most powerful private citizen on Earth. But in this moment, he’s also a mirror. And what he’s reflecting is a government so fractious, so petty, and so performatively broken that the Kremlin no longer has to work that hard to exploit it.

They just have to offer hospitality.
