If the Academy and the world still doubted that Barbie was a full cultural phenomenon, Jimmy Kimmel, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrara, and Kate McKinnon have just proved that the snubs don’t matter, the movie is still the greatest exponent of this year’s cinema.
Kimmel is once again set to host the Oscars this year and to announce it, the famous late-night host recreated one of Barbie’s famous scenes alongside Kate McKinnon. With the amazing Helen Mirren narrating the skit, Kimmel appears lost at Barbieland and needs Weird Barbie’s help to get in time to the Oscars.
Going through the great montage to travel, Kimmel and Weird Barbie go through some of this year’s films nominated for Best Picture including Poor Things (loved the joke of Bella as ‘Even Weirder Barbie’), Maestro, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Oppenheimer (of course with a dig at Matt Damon, Jimmy Kimmel’s long time onscreen nemesis).
Thanks to Weird Barbie’s help, Kimmel manages to reach the Oscars, but after a long journey, he starts doubting himself wondering if he is good enough to host the big event. Enters America Ferrara giving a heartfelt monologue, similar to the one that got her nominated for Best Supporting Actress, on why is it impossible to host the Oscars: “Everyone has something critical to say online. If it goes well, no one says anything, but if it doesn’t it’s your fault.”
And then the most brilliant moment of the skit; hats off to Ryan Gosling, who, like in the movie, randomly comes out from the back seat. He’s wearing the now iconic “I’m Kenough” sweatshirt and has some In-N-Out food and drink. Now, let’s go through all the dialogues because, seriously, they’re genius!
“I got In-N-Out! It’s kind of this cool social media trend where you get it before the Oscars,” says Ryan Gosling, to what Kimmel clarifies: “Actually, I think the trend is to have In-N-Out after the Oscars; actually, after you’ve won the Oscar.” Laughing, Gosling throws the food and drink away and, knowing he will likely lose the Oscar to Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) in the Best Supporting Actor category, he says “Yeah, well, that’s not going to happen.”
“Good thing Greta’s got director in the bag,” adds Gosling with a cocky tone, ‘unaware’ of the biggest Oscar snub of the year. America Ferrara tells him in secret that she wasn’t nominated, and everybody looks at him awkwardly nodding. The last bit is simply hilarious as everybody joins him in a desperate scream like the one we all did when we discovered the Academy snubbed both Greta Gerwig for Best Directing and Margot Robbie for Best Actress.
“Girls grow into women, but not all boys grow into men. Some remain hopelessly stuck in a loop of infantile foolishness. One of them will host the Oscars live on Sunday, March 10th,” closes dame Helen Mirren in what is probably the best Oscars ad we’ve seen!
Fortunately, it seems that the Barbie cast is mature enough to make fun of the situation, and as we saw after the announcement of the nominees, both Greta and Margot aren’t holding any grudges towards anyone in this situation. Now, we’re all just hoping Ryan Gosling gives us that last Ken moment by singing “I’m Just Ken” at the ceremony as his song, ironically did get a nomination!
