The new Star Wars trilogy is coming to a close this December with Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and expectations rose to unprecedented heights as the latest footage came out this Monday. A new trailer takes us through many iconic moments from the franchise, all of which led to this one final episode—which shockingly seems to feature Rey, our female hero, take a turn to the dark side.
A shocking trailer
The trailer was shown exclusively during Disney’s D23 Expo over the weekend and was released for the general public on Monday morning. It opens with footage from previous Star Wars films, building up to the events that will take place in Episode IX. Our main heroes, Rey, Poe, and Finn, are shown preparing for what might well be the most important fight in their lives before we see Rey and Kylo Ren meet for an epic showdown.
But the ultimate shocker comes right at the end, where we see a hooded Rey holding a double-bladed red lightsaber. Every single Star Wars fan knows that red lightsabers plus hoods equals the dark side. Does this actually mean Rey will turn evil in the final film? Maybe, but it’s unlikely that they would let us know in advance. More probably, this is either a ruse on the hero’s part to infiltrate some sort of evil facility or a misleading vision or hallucination—you know, much like when Luke went into that cave at Dagobah and saw a vision of himself as Darth Vader during Episode V.
I guess we’ll have to wait until December to find out.
What else do we know?
The new trailer helped build more anticipation for the final episode in the trilogy after Disney released the first teaser back in April. Interestingly enough, The Rise of Skywalker will reportedly not take place immediately after The Last Jedi left off, instead moving forward to better reflect the characters’ crucial journeys that would have them more mature by the time we see them once more.
As the synopsis reads,
“Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams join forces once again to take viewers on an epic journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the riveting conclusion of the seminal Skywalker saga, where new legends will be born and the final battle for freedom is yet to come.”
The film stars Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, and Billy Dee Williams (reprising his role as Lando Calrissian). This will be J.J. Abrams’ second credit as director of a Disney’s Star Wars trilogy film, the first being Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
The Rise of Skywalker is set to be released on December 20th, 2019. Just a few months more to go!
