The Warrens are the most famous couple in the paranormal world, and although the Conjuring movies have shown us a perfect marriage, reality couldn’t be further from that image. Both were allegedly involved in infidelities and accusations of physical and emotional abuse against minors.
The couple met at a movie theater in 1944 and soon fell in love. In 1945, Ed enlisted in the Navy during World War II, and just weeks later, his ship sank. He was given 30 days of medical leave, during which the Connecticut man returned home and married Lorraine. By 1951, they had welcomed their daughter Judy. In the 1950s, the pair became the most respected figures in the paranormal investigation industry, handling famous cases like Amityville and the haunted doll Annabelle. But behind the façade, Ed and Lorraine reportedly hid a dark family secret that would shock the world.
The Disturbing Truth About Their Marriage
According to testimony, Ed and Lorraine were far from the loving, faith-centered couple portrayed on screen. In 2014, a woman named Judith Penney revealed shocking secrets about the Warrens. She claimed that when she was just 15 years old and Ed was 30, she entered into a relationship with the demonologist. That relationship, she said, was filled with physical and emotional abuse—and even forced abortions.
This was not an “ordinary” affair. Judith lived with the family for 40 years, and Lorraine was allegedly fully aware of everything that was happening. In fact, Penney was even arrested in 1963 for living with the family, as it was illegal at the time for a single woman to reside in the same household as a married man. Shockingly, Ed would reportedly refer to Judith as “the love of his life” right in front of Lorraine.
And it gets worse. Judith alleged that in 1978 she became pregnant by Ed Warren. Lorraine allegedly threatened her and gave her two choices: lie and claim she had been raped, or get an abortion. Judith ultimately underwent an abortion. She also described how Ed frequently mistreated Lorraine, both emotionally and physically, to the point of leaving her unconscious on several occasions.
After the testimony came to light—along with allegations that many of Ed’s so-called “resolved” cases were fabricated—the couple publicly denied everything. Yet records of Judith’s 1963 arrest exist, and contracts for all the films in The Conjuring universe reportedly contain a clause that requires the Warrens to always be portrayed as a happy family, completely omitting any references to underage relationships.
