Next summer, Top Gun: Maverick is hitting the big screen with Tom Cruise in the lead role, three decades after the original Top Gun became a Hollywood classic in 1986. And today, we have the trailer for what appears to be an amazing sequel.
The movie, which will be released on June 25th, 2020, will not only mean Tom Cruise’s return in the role of Maverick, but also Val Kilmer, who will reprise his role as Iceman, as well as Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, and Ed Harris, rounding up the star-studded cast.
What’s it about?
According to Entertainment Weekly: “the sequel picks up decades after the 1986 blockbuster. Cruise reprises his role as hotshot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, now a captain and teaching a new generation of aviators how to dogfight. Miles Teller co-stars as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, a pilot trainee, and the son of Maverick’s late friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (and, by the look of it, he’s not a Maverick fan).”
Bringing back an 80s classic
While the original Top Gun, directed by Tony Scott, has only a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was a huge box office hit, grossing $356 million USD, and cemented Tom Cruise’s budding Hollywood stardom after his role in Risky Business.
The movie also lives on in pop culture and the collective imagination thanks to the success of the song “Take My Breath Away,” performed by the band Berlin, for which the movie won the Best Original Song Academy Award in 1986.
Tom Cruise: the action hero
Top Gun: Maverick will be the ninth straight action movie in Tom Cruise’s filmography in the last few years, since his participation in Rock of Ages (a “musical comedy-drama”) in 2012. Looks like the man likes to stay on top of his game by playing action heroes.
We still have a few months to go before seeing Cruise playing Maverick again in theaters. Until then, we’ll have to wait for more details about what will certainly be the ultimate summer blockbuster.
