Bridgerton Actress Demands More Nude Scenes to Teach the Public a Lesson

‘Bridgerton’ finally returned to Netflix and has given us everything we always wanted to see: a love story between two of the most beloved characters of the series, however, this new installment of the show has arrived with an interesting controversy, and that is that its protagonist demanded the production to have more nude scenes to communicate something very important.

This hit Netflix series is produced by Shonda Rhymes, who you may remember for being the creator of the medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, or the legal drama, How To Get Away With Murder.

Well, now, from the hand of the most popular streaming company in the world, it has brought us this adaptation of the book franchise of the same name that has become a cult among its loyal fans.

One of the aspects that fans expected to see in this season would be the physical change that we would see in Penelope Featherington, and if you have ever read the books, you will know that she undergoes a very big transformation by losing weight and having a ‘glow up’ to make her one of the most beloved characters of the series.

In the third season of bridgerton we will see penelope featherington having a much deeper psychological change than ever before.
In the third season of bridgerton we will see penelope featherington having a much deeper psychological change than ever before.

Well, it was the creator of Bridgerton herself, Jess Brownell, who told us that, in the first place, this will not happen in the show, and her reason is much more interesting than it might seem.

For the creator, penelope featherington's physique has never been a problem, in reality, she is perfect just the way she is, so she shouldn't change any aspect of her physique to please the audience or the characters within her own universe.

Instead, the transformation we’ll see in this series will be something internal. Jess Brownell assures that Penelope Featherington is already a completely beautiful and perfect woman, however, she still has to learn to have more confidence in herself, that is, in this new series we will see, rather, a personal development that will face her to have new experiences and discover true love from knowing how to love and appreciate herself. According to the creator, the physical change mentioned in the book was removed because it didn’t add anything important to the character’s story.

Well, that’s not all, and Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, also gave her point of view of her character and agrees that the most important thing is to speak from the inside of herself, not so much from the outside. It was because of this that she asked the filmmakers of the series to give her scenes with much more explicit nudity to send a message about female bodies and how no one should have an opinion about them:

“I specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included,” Nicola Coughlan said in an interview, adding, “I felt like it was the biggest ‘fuck you’ to the whole conversation around my body; It was incredibly empowering.”

As you probably already know, Bridgerton has been very well received by the public by breaking many of the canons of beauty to which we have been exposed all our lives; One of the main slogans of this series is to have a very definite focus on ‘body positivity‘, making it clear that all bodies are beautiful.

“There’s a reason this show became a phenomenon: It’s about women feeling desire, taking ownership of their sexuality and leading the charge in those situations rather than simply being an object of a man’s affection,” she adds in an interview.

Nicola Coughlan says that being determined to show her body on screen came more from a decision to reinforce her confidence and silence negative comments about her body; And this decision was very well received by the audience, who have already made a statement on the matter:

“Can we just talk about how refreshing it is to see a plus-size person being romanticized and seen as desirable and appearing in racy scenes without it being some horrible joke,” the comments on Twitter read.

And even, other users add, “This is for the plus-size girls who deserve to be portrayed as sexy, desirable, and adorable. This season means a lot.”

In the end, Nicola Coughlan’s decision to have much more explicit scenes within the third season of Bridgerton is breaking all conventional paradigms, and this decision, of which she is very proud, is an example that all bodies are equally beautiful and important.
