In 1997, the disappearance and subsequent murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk shocked the community of Saanich on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and the rest of Canada.

Today, Reena’s tragic story has been revisited in the Hulu limited series “Under the Bridge,” adapted from Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 true-crime book of the same name.

The series, created by Quinn Shephard and starring Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough, aims to shed light on the events leading up to and following Reena’s death.

Who Was Reena Virk

Reena Virk was a 14-year-old Canadian girl from a diverse cultural background. Her father was an immigrant from India, and her mother hailed from an Indo-Canadian family that had converted from Hinduism to Jehovah’s Witnesses after moving to Canada. This religious affiliation set her family apart within their predominantly Sikh South Asian community of about 3,000 people.

Reena struggled to fit in with her peers and was often bullied and excluded by girls influenced by the subculture of Los Angeles street gangs. To gain acceptance, she began smoking marijuana and cigarretes and rebelling. She felt constrained by her family’s strict religious practices. In 1996, seeking more freedom, she falsely accused her father of abuse in hopes of being placed in foster care. This led to her spending several months in provincial care before she withdrew the accusations and returned home.

The Tragic Night

On November 14, 1997, Reena Virk was invited to a party under the Gorge Waterway bridge in Saanich, a suburb of Victoria, British Columbia. The party was attended by a group of teenagers who would later be dubbed the “Shoreline Six.” Among them was Nicole Cook, who confronted Reena over rumors she claimed Reena was spreading. The confrontation escalated when Cook put a cigarette out on Reena’s forehead. This act of aggression quickly led to a brutal assault involving several other teenagers, including Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski.

Interviewer: “As we start to see in the third episode, her death is mostly the fault of Kelly, the most aggressive girl within that friend group.”
Quinn Shephard: “She was the only person in real life who we couldn’t find any evidence of remorse from. With every single other character, you could trace a level of humanity to them. With her, you can’t find it. She’s very famous in Canada for a reason.” Quinn Shephard for Vulture

After the initial attack, Reena attempted to escape but was followed by Ellard and Glowatski. They continued to beat her, and at the water’s edge, Ellard held Reena underwater until she drowned. Reena’s body was discovered eight days later, on November 22, 1997.

The investigation into Reena’s murder revealed the shocking details of the assault. Initially, Cook and Ellard denied their involvement, but evidence, including Reena’s jacket found in Ellard’s closet with saltwater stains, pointed to their guilt. Several teens testified against Ellard and Glowatski, leading to their convictions for second-degree murder. The other girls involved in the assault received sentences for their participation.

The six girls involved received varying sentences, ranging from 60-day conditional sentences to one year in jail. The group’s ringleader, Kelly Ellard, has repeatedly sought to overturn her conviction and reduce her sentence, occasionally receiving day paroles. Warren Glowatski, the only male participant, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to seven years in prison, and he is now fully released on parole.

The savagery and senselessness of the crime stunned the community and authorities alike. Retired Victoria Police Sgt. Rob Dibden reflected on the case, saying, “Every time new information came to light, it opened your eyes a little wider and it was shocking.”

Hulu’s Adaptation

Reena Virk was the daughter of Indian immigrant Manjit Virk and Indo-Canadian Suman Virk. She was a student at Colquitz Junior Secondary and was described by Godfrey as possessing “a rare combination of boldness and innocence.” Reena faced challenges in her household and had a history of running away. In 1996, she accused her father of abuse, leading to her placement in foster care. However, she later recanted these accusations and returned home.

The Hulu series “Under the Bridge” closely follows the events detailed in Godfrey’s book, while also incorporating fictionalized elements to enhance the narrative. Godfrey worked with the series creator Quinn Shephard before her death in 2022 to develop the adaptation. The series aims to balance factual accuracy with creative storytelling to highlight the universal truths about adolescence and the tragic consequences of bullying and violence.

Riley Keough portrays Rebecca Godfrey, who played a significant role in investigating and documenting Reena’s story. Godfrey’s character adds depth to the narrative by providing a perspective that intertwines her personal experiences with her professional work. Lily Gladstone plays Cam Bentland, a fictional police officer representing multiple real-life sources.

The series also explores the racial dynamics and potential motivations behind the crime, an aspect that was not fully addressed during the initial investigation. The decision to burn Reena with a cigarette on her forehead, resembling a bindi, suggests a racial component to the attack, though this was not officially recognized at the time.

“The reason it was dismissed as a potential motive was that not all of the kids who attacked Reena were white. In the late ’90s, there was a lack of understanding of the nuance. That was all stuff we wanted to see play out in the show” said Shephard in an interview.

Warren Glowatski was released on full parole in 2010 after serving 11 years in prison, with the support of Reena’s parents, who believed he had reformed. Kelly Ellard, now known as Kerry Marie Sim, was granted day parole in 2017 and later full parole. She admitted her role in Reena’s murder during her parole hearings. Ellard now lives in a residential facility in British Columbia and continues to face challenges as a single mother.

The story of Reena Virk is a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of bullying and violence. The Hulu series brings this tragic story to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding Reena’s life and the events that led to her untimely death.
