An iconic villain deserves another iconic villain. Vanessa Williams, known for her role in the American version of Ugly Betty, is stepping into the fierce shoes of Runway magazine’s boss lady, Miranda Priestly, in the musical The Devil Wears Prada.
The news dropped straight from the source – Vanessa herself took to Instagram to give us a sneak peek at this new rendition based on David Frankel’s comedy and Lauren Weisberger’s novel. In the promo clip, we see Vanessa strutting out of the elevator, clutching a copy of Runway, as she heads to her office. After whipping off her shades, she looks dead into the camera and quips, “Don’t just sit there. Buy tickets or something.”
This fresh take on fashion satire hits the UK this summer, and it’s got Elton John‘s beats to boot. Word on the street is the rest of the cast is still under wraps, but what we do know is The Devil Wears Prada will be helmed by the three-time Tony Award winner, Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots: The Musical, Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman, Hairspray), with lyrics by songstress Shaina Taub and a script by Kate Wetherhead (“Submissions Only”).
“Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.” Williams spilled, according to Variety.
Playing an outlandish and demanding fashion editor isn’t new territory for Vanessa; in Ugly Betty, she slayed as Wilhelmina Slater, raking in praise for her standout performance and drawing parallels with Miranda, showcasing the stories of two powerhouses ruling a fashion mag in pop culture.
