Bad Bunny Puts His Career On Hold Indefinitely To Protest

The political situation in Puerto Rico is in a turning point. In an unprecedented historical moment, people have taken to the streets to protest governor Ricardo Rosselló, who was revealed to have made misogynistic comments and made fun of Puerto Rican citizens who were affected by Hurricane María in 2017. And now, the Puerto Rican trap superstar Bad Bunny (whose real name is Benito Martínez) has decided to join the movement to demand Rosselló’s resignation, and change the corrupt system that has failed the victims of the hurricane and that has reached its lowest point with Rosselló’s comments.

“I’m cancelling everything,” said Bad Bunny in a video on Sunday morning, claiming that he will cancel all of his performances and engagements and put his career on hold indefinitely until change comes to the island. Over the last few years, things have gotten worse for Puerto Rico, especially due to President Trump’s policies: he has ignored the territory completely and has also made derogatory comments about Puerto Ricans and the aftermath of Hurricane María.

Bad Bunny, who is visibly upset about recent events, says that this is not the time to think about music, and that it’s time to make a change. As of this moment, we don’t know for how long the protests will continue, but we do know that they have received the support of various other Puerto Rican artists, such as Ricky Martin, Residente, Tommy Torres, and even Benicio del Toro.

Various members of Rosselló’s cabinet have resigned in the last few days. Thousands of people are still recovering from the hurricane. The government is not paying attention to them, and more cases of corruption are being discovered. Rosselló still won’t resign, and the demonstrations keep on coming.
