For some reason, many understand sadness as something to be ashamed of. Who hasn’t heard the typical “there are people suffering even more than you and they’re not making a scene.” And the thing is that they don’t understand that sadness can reach unimaginable levels to the point that we can’t sleep, eat, or do anything.
Now, while sadness can be seen as something more common, depression, on the other hand, can really take us to very dark places. Those who suffer from depression know very well the anxiety, unease, and the panic that can be experienced to the point that it’s hard to even enjoy the simple things in life. Many fight against it, while others accept it and learn how to live with it.
Billie Eilish is one of those millions who, as she’s declared in countless interviews, deal with depression every second of her life. Her coping mechanism? Singing as a way to learn how to love it and who she is with it. Of course, it’s scary, but what isn’t? These quotes from her popular songs are just proof that there’s a way to overcome our obstacles, or if not, to learn how to embrace it to make us stronger.
“Bad Guy”
«Don’t say thank you or please
I do what I want when I’m wanting to.
My soul? So cynical».
“I Wish You Were Gay”
«Don’t say I’m not your type,
Just say that I’m not your preferred sexual orientation».
“Bury a Friend”
«Your talk’ll be somethin’ that shouldn’t be said out loud,
Honestly, I thought that I would be dead by now (Wow)».
“I Love You”

«We fall apart as it gets dark,
I’m in your arms in Central Park.
There’s nothing you could do or say,
I can’t escape the way, I love you».
“When the Party’s Over”
«Don’t you know I’m no good for you?
I’ve learned to lose you, can’t afford to,
Tore my shirt to stop you bleedin’
But nothin’ ever stops you leavin’».
“Listen Before I Go”

«If you need me, wanna see me
Better hurry ’cause I’m leaving soon.
Sorry can’t save me now.
Sorry I don’t know how.
Sorry there’s no way out (sorry)».
“Xanny”

«I must be missing something,
They just keep doing nothing,
Too intoxicated to be scared.
Better off without them.
They’re nothing but unstable».
“You Should See Me in A Crown”
«I like the way they all
Scream.
Tell me which one is worse,
Living or dying first».
“All the Good Girls Go to Hell”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BT2rhXTJhE
«All the good girls go to hell.
‘Cause even God herself has enemies,
And once the water starts to rise
And heaven’s out of sight
She’ll want the devil on her team».
“My Strange Addiction”
«You are my strange addiction.
My doctors can’t explain
My symptoms or my pain,
But you are my strange addiction».
Depression isn’t a game or a trend to follow. It isn’t some kind of accessory either or something to catch people’s attention. It’s a serious matter that has to be taken care of properly. Billie Eilish is only seventeen years old, and she’s broken all records thanks to her bold and honest songs. She’s a sensation, not only because she’s offering new sounds to her audience, but also because she’s managed to make millions identify with her struggle and her own experiences.
