Billy Ray Cyrus Hit Rock Bottom at 62 — His Grandson Said Two Words That Changed It

Billy ray cyrus looks thoughtfully into the distance, reflecting on his comeback and the two words his grandson bear told him.

By 2024, Billy Ray Cyrus had already survived sepsis, temporary vocal paralysis, a deeply public divorce from Tish Cyrus after 28 years, and what he describes as a complete fracturing of his family. He was, by his own words, broken — sitting at rock bottom with no clear path out. What pulled him back wasn’t a therapist or a hit record. It was his five-year-old grandson, Bear, quietly looking at him and saying two words: “Try again.”

The Perfect Storm That Broke Billy Ray Cyrus

Most people know the headline version: Miley Cyrus‘s father, the man behind “Achy Breaky Heart,” going through a rough patch. But what Cyrus described to People was something far more total than a rough patch. In 2024, he contracted sepsis — a life-threatening condition in which the body’s immune response turns on itself — and nearly died. The illness left him with temporary vocal paralysis, meaning a lifelong musician woke up one day and couldn’t sing. That particular loss, he said, shattered his sense of who he was.

On top of the health crisis, his 28-year marriage had already collapsed. He and Tish filed for divorce in 2022, and facing life alone after nearly three decades sent fractures through the entire family. Rumors of estrangements with his children — including how Miley Cyrus navigated her own reinvention — added isolation to an already unbearable weight. He had no voice, no marriage, no music, and, for a stretch of time, no real sense of direction. “I went to hell and back,” he said.

Bear Said It Better Than Anyone Else Could

It was in the middle of that isolation that his five-year-old grandson Bear looked at him — apparently without any context, without any script — and said: “Try again.” Cyrus was clear in the People interview that the moment hit him as something more than a toddler’s offhand comment. “In that moment I thought, ‘He’s telling you something,'” Cyrus said. “Is it about love? Music? Somehow, I got to try again at both. So I’m learning to try again.”

There’s something quietly devastating about that — a man who has spent decades onstage, in stadiums, in front of cameras, finding the most useful piece of advice of his life in a sentence a kindergartner probably didn’t overthink. But that’s also exactly what made it land. It wasn’t complicated. It wasn’t conditional. It was permission, in two words, from someone who had no idea how much those words were needed.

Where Billy Ray Cyrus Is Now — and What Comes Next

His voice came back. That, alone, is the kind of thing that changes how a person measures what matters. Cyrus is now channeling the entire arc — the sepsis, the silence, the divorce, the reconciliation work with his children — into his upcoming album, The Hill. He hasn’t released a full project with this kind of personal stakes behind it in years, and for the first time in a long time, he seems to mean every word of it.

Comebacks in country music are common enough to be a cliché. But what Cyrus is describing isn’t a commercial pivot or a rebranding exercise. It’s a person who genuinely hit the floor, got a two-word nudge from the smallest person in the room, and decided that was enough to start. Bear will probably never fully understand what he did.
