Meet ‘Ziggy Stardust’ Barbie: A Tribute To David Bowie’s First Hit

“Space Oddity,” David Bowie’s first smash hit, has been blasting on rock lovers’ speakers for fifty years now, and to mark this special anniversary, there’s been a series of partnerships and releases, including a special-edition album called The Mercury Demos and even Bowie-themed sneakers. All of this seemed a bit out there, much as Ziggy Stardust would have liked it, but Mattel has taken it to a new level by releasing a Barbie dressed up as Ziggy-era David Bowie.

@barbieLet’s not forget that Bowie wasn’t only into music; he actually created very elaborate performance experiences that involved extravagant “glam rock” outfits with bright colors and quirky yet stylish body suits. This new Barbie rocks a bright red mullet, a blue-and-red jumpsuit, star-shaped silver earrings, and red platform boots, not to mention Ziggy’s iconic makeup.

Some people on social media have wondered why Mattel would have chosen Barbie instead of Ken, but this makes perfect sense. David Bowie was all about androgyny and the ambiguity of both genders. Choosing Ken would’ve missed the entire point of gender fluidity, while Barbie really captures Bowie’s own physique, slender and delicate. The entire glam look is based on a flamboyant use of colors, platform shoes, and lots and lots of sparkle. Ziggy Stardust Barbie? We gotta have it.
