The Super Bowl Halftime Show has captivated millions through classic rap songs and alluring stages honoring LA’s rap culture. However, putting aside the amazing show Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and guest performer 50 Cent put together, something that’s resonating on social media is Eminem’s defying message during the show.
After performing his Oscar-winning anthem ‘Lose Yourself,’ Eminem took the knee in protest completely defying the NFL. As you might remember, NFL player Colin Kaepernick was one of the first to kneel during the anthem in protest of police brutality and racial inequality. After being expelled for protesting, many artists supported him by refusing to make a Halftime Show. Eminem taking the knee was definitely a strong message.

Apparently, Eminem pitched the idea before the performance, and the organizers asked him not to do so. As we know, he’s not the kind of person who simply abides by norms. Not only that, but this was also a message to the organization who had reportedly censored his co-performers Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar from making any political statement ahead of their performance. Dre was even questioned about choosing to perform ‘Still D.R.E.’ and the powerful line “still not loving police.”
Looks like, despite the openness, the entertainment industry pretending to portray, censoring, and trying to keep the status quo is still a common practice.
