Until a few years ago, being able to see bands such as My Chemical Romance, Paramore, AFI, The used, and A Day to Remember together would only be possible at the Warped Tour, which was a rock traveling tour that toured around the United States annually. Recently the When We Were Young Festival was unveiled and it spread nostalgia to the emos, but… Where did these bands come from?
Without a doubt, talking about these bands brings back some old memories and creates nostalgia for some people. Makes you remember the years when Myspace reigned the internet and being emo some’s predilected style; who would imagine that many years after in social media such as TikTok, there would be people replicating emo looks, or using songs like ‘Teenagers’ by My Chemical Romance for a trend?. We tell you the origin of bands that marked a turning point in genres like rock, post-hardcore, emo, and screamo.
What is post-hardcore, emo, and screamo
‘And no mom, these are not just screams!’… Inspired by post-punk and noise rock, post-hardcore is an aggressive and intense genre that maintains the roots of hardcore punk emphasizing a creative expression with very fast tempos, loud volume, and heavy bass levels.
While on the other hand, we have, emo, which is a rock genre that makes emphasis on emotional expressions. Actually, it emerged as a style of post-hardcore, and used to be known as emotional hardcore; it is also associated with certain aspects of fashion such as skinny black jeans, black eyeliner, black hair with bangs, and studded belts.
The iconic emo bands
We cannot forget to mention the Holy Spirit in the emo trinity, My Chemical Romance. Formed in 2001 in New Jersey, this band ruled genres like alternative punk rock, rock, post-hardcore, and emo, and was a path-breaking and an inspiration for bands that emerged years later.
Founded by the Way brothers, Gerard in the vocals, Mikey in the bass, Ray Toro, and Frank Iero as guitarists. In some interviews, they have said that their greatest inspirations were bands like Misfits, Queen, or Morrissey. The critique has said that the essence of this group lies with the drama, creating a visceral and dramatic rock.
It wouldn’t hurt to talk about ‘The Black Parade’ their third album that was for many people the best album of MCR and that includes songs from genres like rock, emo, pop-punk, opera rock, and power ballad. In 2020, Rolling Stone released their recurring opinion survey ‘The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time’ where we can find this album on the #361.
Three years after the emergence of My Chemical Romance, in 2004, a band led by a woman was born, the name of the girl? Hayley Williams, the name of the band? Paramore.
The style of this group from Tennessee has generally been alternative rock, pop-punk, pop-rock, and emo. They achieved success with the release of ‘Riot’, which gave them a large number of awards and more recognition. One year later, they were part of the ‘Twilight’ soundtrack with their song ‘Decode’ as the main theme.
These two bands form part of those considered ‘Old but Gold’ bands and are the main artist to perform on the ‘When We Were Young Festival’, which will take place on October 22nd, 2022 at Las Vegas Festival Grounds in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the lineup that made us say ‘Make America Emo Again’.
