Lady Gaga’s latest album Mayhem is shaping to be a rollercoaster of emotions, and it turns out her fiancé, Michael Polansky, is the man behind the mayhem. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gaga spilled the tea on how Polansky inspired one of the album’s most heartfelt tracks, “Blade of Grass,” with a proposal idea so simple, it’s almost too romantic.

“Will You Marry Me? Here’s a Blade of Grass.”
Gaga revealed that the song was born from a sweet moment in their backyard, where Polansky asked her, “When I propose to you, what am I supposed to do?” Her response?
“You can just wrap a blade of grass around my finger in the backyard. And I’ll say yes.”
Cue the collective “awww” from every Gaga fan on the planet.

But don’t let the simplicity fool you—this isn’t your average love story. Polansky later proposed for real in April 2024 after a day of rock climbing (because apparently, wrapping grass around her finger wasn’t dramatic enough for these two). Gaga described the moment as bittersweet, as it brought back memories of her late friend and Haus of Gaga managing director, Sonja Durham, who passed away in 2017.
“I was remembering that this happy moment and this happy thing in my life was happening in a place where it was bittersweet,” Gaga shared. “I was reflecting on that too.”

The Making of Mayhem
Gaga describes “Blade of Grass” as having an “eerie and tense” energy, with “ominous chords” that contrast sharply with the album’s closing track, “Die With a Smile.” According to Gaga, the album’s chaos ultimately resolves in a hopeful, dreamy finale.
“The beauty of the album is that the Mayhem doesn’t repeat, it actually ends,” she said.
And who do we have to thank for this pop masterpiece? None other than Polansky himself. Gaga told Vogue that her fiancé was the one who encouraged her to “make a new pop record” after seeing her fire on the Chromatica tour.
“I wanted to help her keep that alive all the time and just start making music that made her happy,” Polansky said.

The Ultimate Power Couple
Polansky isn’t just Gaga’s muse—he’s also her collaborator. He’s credited as a co-writer on the track “Disease,” proving that this duo is as creative as they are cute.
So, what’s next for these two? A wedding, obviously. And if their love story is any indication, it’s going to be equal parts chaotic and romantic—just like Mayhem.
