New Mozart Music Just Dropped in 2024

A newly discovered Mozart composition has been unveiled: a long-lost manuscript has brought centuries-old music to life. Well, that’s unexpected, but cool, right?!

Written by a young Mozart in the early 1760s, the piece was performed for the very first time at the Leipzig Opera this past weekend, offering a fresh glimpse into the musical genius of the composer’s youth.

The manuscript wasn’t penned by Mozart himself—famed for works like The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Requiem— but it is a copy dated around 1780. The scribe attributed it to “Wolfgang Mozart,” notably omitting his middle name, which Mozart began using after 1769. This detail suggests the piece was likely composed before that year, according to a release from Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg.

According to the German outlet MDR, the piece was first performed in Mozart’s hometown of Salzburg last Thursday and made its German debut at the Leipzig Opera on Saturday. You can listen to part of the trio performed via the German publication ZDF Heute.

About The New Piece

The composition is a 12-minute piece in C major, written for two violins and a bass. It’s been added to Köchel, the catalog of Mozart’s works, as KV 648, and is also known by the names “Ganz kleine Nachtmusik” and “Serenate ex C.” The work consists of seven short movements, and the pianist is believed to have been between 10 and 13 years old when he composed it.

The age speculation, according to Ulrich Leisinger, head of research at the International Mozarteum Foundation, is because he was primarily recognized for his keyboard music, arias, and sinfonias at that era, so by the time Mozart was 17, he likely would not have composed in this style anymore.

“We know from a list created by Leopold Mozart that young Mozart wrote many other chamber works, but most of them have been lost,” Leisinger shared. “It seems that, thanks to a stroke of luck, this complete string trio survived in Leipzig, possibly preserved by Mozart’s sister as a keepsake.”

This exciting discovery adds to the artist’s legacy, just a year after new research shed light on Beethoven’s life as studies revealed that Beethoven suffered from serious liver issues and a hepatitis infection before his death in 1827.
