Steve Albini, the influential music engineer and musician from California known for his work on Nirvana’s album “In Utero,” passed away at the age of 61 in his recording studio.

According to Pitchfork, the cause of death was a cardiac arrest. The producer was about to release an album with Shellac – “To All Trains” – for the first time in 10 years.

Born in Pasadena, California, Steve Albini was a major figure in underground rock bands. Despite leading bands like Shellac and Big Black, it was his work as a producer that made him a music legend, though he preferred the term “engineer” to “producer.

He was also renowned for producing iconic albums that left an indelible mark on the history of rock, such as “Surfer Rosa” by The Pixies or “In Utero” by Nirvana.

Steve Albini’s Legacy

A common practice in popular music is to record each instrument separately and then mix them, but Albini revolutionized these procedures by recording bands “live”: the band played the song at the same time, in the same room.

Albini estimated that he had contributed to the recording of around 1500 or 2000 albums; most by obscure and unknown artists. However, he has also worked with famous artists such as Nirvana, The Breeders, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Helmet, Robert Plant, Fred Schneider, The Stooges, Mogwai, The Jesus Lizard, Pixies, Don Caballero, PJ Harvey, Manic Street Preachers, Fun People, Jarvis Cocker, Bush, Joanna Newsom, Melt-Banana, The Frames, Jawbreaker, Low, Dirty Three, Cheap Trick, Slint, Zao, and Neurosis.

Albini was also admired for sticking to his principles by questioning music industry standards and made that publicly in thousands of articles and interviews.

As part of his legacy, Steve founded Electrical Audio studio in 1997, which has been a major promoter of indie rock and punk rock genres internationally.
