RJ Mitte, the actor who gave Walter White Jr. his heart and humor across all five seasons of Breaking Bad, died on October 12, 2026, in Brownsville, Texas. He was 34. His representatives confirmed the news, describing him as a ‘beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate’ — three things he genuinely was, in that order and all at once.

The Role That Made Him, and the Person Behind It

Mitte appeared in all 56 episodes of AMC‘s Breaking Bad, playing Flynn — Walt’s son, the moral compass the show kept testing. The performance worked because Mitte brought something no casting director could manufacture: he lives with cerebral palsy, the same condition his character has, and he never let the role become a symbol. Flynn was just a kid trying to make sense of his father. That specificity is what made the performance land, and what made it last.

He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child — a condition that affects muscle control and coordination — and grew up in Louisiana before his family relocated to Texas. By the time Breaking Bad premiered in 2008, Mitte was already learning to modulate the severity of his symptoms for the role, working with coaches and producers to find a version of Flynn that felt honest rather than performed. It was detailed, unglamorous work, and it showed.

An Advocate Who Used Every Platform He Had

After Breaking Bad wrapped in 2013, Mitte could have coasted on the show’s legacy. He didn’t. He became an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and served as president of The Mitte Foundation, which supports people with disabilities and promotes inclusion in entertainment. He gave interviews, took meetings, and kept showing up at events where Hollywood’s gatekeepers could hear directly from someone who had actually navigated the industry with a visible disability — something that remains rarer than it should be. Much like the broader push for disabled representation in film, Mitte understood that visibility without advocacy is just optics.

His argument was simple: Hollywood casts non-disabled actors to play disabled characters constantly, and that practice has real costs — for the actors who don’t get hired and for the audiences who never see themselves on screen. He didn’t moralize about it. He just kept working, kept talking, and kept funding the infrastructure for others to follow.

Gone at 34, and What He Leaves Behind

His representatives requested privacy for his family following the news. Law enforcement in Brownsville, Texas is investigating the circumstances of his death; officials confirmed to media outlets including TMZ that he died by suicide. He was 34 years old.

The Breaking Bad cast shaped television in the 2010s, and Mitte was part of that — not in spite of his role but because of how specifically and honestly he played it. The disability-rights work he built alongside it deserved decades more. Both things are true, and both losses are real.
