With the release of Superman: Legacy, DC fans—and Henry Cavill enthusiasts—are buzzing with excitement. Even though we’ve only seen the trailer, it’s clear Henry Cavill will be tough to top. But, of course, before Cavill donned the cape many others brought the Man of Steel to life on the big screen.
Superman, created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, made his iconic debut on April 18, 1938, in DC’s Action Comics #1. As the quintessential superhero, Superman set the standard for heroism and remained the king of comic book sales in the U.S. until the 1980s.
Love him or not, there’s no denying his iconic status. And while some of us are a bit fatigued by reboots, it can be exciting to see if a new interpretation will honor his enduring legacy. Guess we’ll wait and see!
Superman Through the Decades
Superman and the Mole Men (1951)
This 67-minute film marked Superman’s cinematic debut, blending science fiction with heroics. George Reeves took on the role, setting the stage for Superman’s legacy on screen.
