All Eyes On Rafah, The IA Image That Is Taking Over The Internet

The conflict between Palestine and Israel has turned the Gaza Strip and nearby territories into a graveyard, filled with the loss of thousands of innocent lives. While many have chosen to ignore the humanitarian disaster, others have raised their voices and demanded a ceasefire through the ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ movement.

For months, news headlines have been filled with the lethal consequences of military attacks. However, last Tuesday’s Israeli bombing of displaced persons’ camps in Rafah, which killed 75 people, including several children, and injured over 250, has been the tipping point.

An AI-created image has become the symbol of a global initiative aimed at awakening the international community to the critical situation in the Gaza Strip and the urgency of a global mobilization to help save the lives of millions of innocents.

What Does ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ Stands For?

Amid the ongoing and devastating conflict between Palestine and Israel, a media campaign has emerged that has captured worldwide attention: ‘All Eyes on Rafah.’

The campaign features an AI-generated image showing an aerial view of a refugee camp with the phrase: ‘All Eyes on Rafah.’

The slogan ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ originated from a statement by Richard Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) representative for Gaza and the occupied West Bank, who remarked that “all eyes” are on the humanitarian tragedy occurring in Rafah.

So far, the image has been shared more than 43 million times on social media, especially on Instagram and X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Palestine-Israel Conflict

The conflict between Palestine and Israel is one of the longest and most complex in the world. It dates back to the mid-20th century, with the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

Since then, both peoples have lived in a state of nearly constant conflict, marked by wars, uprisings, and multiple failed peace attempts.

The situation in Gaza is especially critical. Controlled by the Islamist group Hamas since 2007, the Gaza Strip has been subject to blockades and multiple military offensives by Israel.

In this context, Rafah, located in southern Gaza, has been a focal point of attacks, as the area has not been controlled by the Israeli army and represents a crucial exit route for the wounded and Palestinians seeking refuge in Egypt.

The Virality Of the AI Image, ‘All Eyes on Rafah’

Figures like Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and celebrities such as Palestinian model Bella Hadid, Nicola Coughlan, Dua Lipa, and Aaron Paul, amongst other celebrirties that have amplified the ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ message.

There is no doubt that the ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ campaign has once again demonstrated the power of social media to raise awareness and mobilize support in times of crisis. However, the next step is to translate all that support and pressure into real initiatives and actions that genuinely help the thousands of children, women, and men caught in the crossfire.
