Nestled within the walls of the imposing Baker Mansion, Anna Baker’s haunted dress never fulfilled its original purpose but has captivated entire generations with its beauty and mystery. Anna Baker’s dress symbolizes unrequited love, the struggle against social conventions, and inexplicable events that endure to this day.

Anna Baker’s Wedding Dress

The story goes back to 1849 in the city of Altoona, Pennsylvania, United States, when a beautiful, young, high society millionaire named Anna Baker fell in love with a young man who worked for her father, an iron magnate, named Elias Baker. Anna Baker’s father’s wish was for his daughter to marry a young man who belonged to the same social circle; however, her heart was with that young laborer to whom she secretly became engaged and for which she had a wedding dress made.

Upon learning of the engagement, her father interrupted it and banished his daughter’s fiancé from Altoona, condemning the young woman to spinsterhood and bitterness until the day of her death in 1914, since she refused to marry the man imposed on her by her father. When the wedding was canceled, the wedding dress was worn not by Anna Baker but by a wealthy woman from a local family, named Elizabeth Dysart, to be kept very carefully for years in her home.

It is said that the dress was placed on a mannequin in front of a mirror in front of what was Anna’s bedroom, as that was one way she could see herself dressed as a bride in some way. After Anna’s death, her home became a museum, where the piece is kept and is said to move as if the frustrated bride was trying it on.

The Legend of Anna Baker’s Wedding Dress

According to legend, Anna Baker’s wedding dress hides a curse that has been passed down through the years. It is said that Anna was so in love with Eliab Wetherby that, after her unrequited love led her to a life of sadness and loneliness, she decided to burden her dress with all the negative emotions she had experienced.

It is believed that, having never worn the dress to her wedding, the accumulated emotions supernaturally permeated the fabric. The dress is said to possess a shadowy energy that can affect those who get too close to it.

Visitors to the Baker Mansion often claim to feel an eerie presence near the dress, and there have even been reported sightings of a ghostly figure dressed in white near the dress display. Some accounts also suggest that the dress has caused misfortune in the lives of those who have possessed or otherwise tampered with it.

From unexplained accidents to bad breaks, the curse of the dress becomes a supernatural story that adds to the mystery of the Baker Mansion.
