The Mexican territory is so vast that it has plenty of mysteries and legends. The island of Bermeja is one of the most unknown but enigmatic ones. This supposed territory has even been compared to the mysterious Bermuda Triangle or Atlantis itself.
The maps that contemplated it dates from between the 16th and 19th century; these indicated that this island was located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 100 kilometers off the coast of Progreso, Yucatan. Bermeja was also drawn in other maps from Italy, Portugal, and Spain. There is also evidence of its existence in some United States records with the coordinates 22º 33′ N and 91º 22′ W.

These records date before 1946 but currently, when searching for this location on Google Maps, you can only see the blue ocean. However, when you zoom in, you can see a mound of stones. Some users have ventured to make reviews of the site full of humor and attached photographs of other sites to complement them.
In 2009 an expedition attempted to find this island from Veracruz to Yucatan; they did not find any single evidence of the Bermeja island. Therefore, some crazy theories of its disappearance arose.
What happened to the island of Bermeja?
The CIA disappeared it
As it happens with these stories, some claim that the U.S. government is behind the disappearance. They even argue that the CIA decided to dynamite Bermejo in the 1990s so that this territory would not affect U.S. commercial interests; since it is believed that there are big oil reserves in this area.
Erosion
The less complicated and closer to reality theory suggests that this territory eroded over the years until it disappeared completely. This is a very complex natural process, requiring hundreds of years to take place completely; however, considering the size of the island and its poorly monitoring, it could be possible.
It sank
Another possibility is that a massive tidal passed over the island causing its imminent sinking. It could also be that, as a result of global warming and the rising sea levels, this island is actually under the sea. This backs up a recent discovery made by a group of specialists from the Justo Sierra ship, who assure that in this area there is a depth of 1.42 meters, an extraordinary condition in the open sea.

What do you think happened to this territory? Do you think there is a bigger mystery to solve than the one proposed by these theories?
