The Pride Ban: A Constitutional Crackdown
The amendment, almost certain to pass thanks to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s supermajority, isn’t just about Pride—it’s about rewriting the rules of Hungarian society.
- No More Pride? The amendment codifies a March law that criminalizes events deemed to “promote” homosexuality to minors, punishable by fines up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546). Authorities can even use facial recognition to track attendees.
- “Children’s Rights” Overrule Everything—The amendment declares that a child’s “moral, physical, and spiritual development” supersedes nearly all other rights, including freedom of assembly. Legal experts warn this creates a dangerous precedent.
