Senator and presidential nominee Bernie Sanders teamed up with rapper Cardi B to make a video for his 2020 campaign. According to CNN, the 77 year-old politics veteran and the 26 year-old musician talked about student debt, climate change and minimum wage. Both of the parties posted pictures of their meeting on their Instagram accounts, with Sanders describing it as a “great conversation about the future of America.”
Cardi B and Sanders had previously expressed support for each other on social media and even television, meaning this meet up was long overdue. Sanders endorsed her thoughts about president Franklin Roosevelt, who enacted a series of social programs in the 1930’s and 40’s, as “the real ‘Make America Great Again’ President”, while Cardi B shared thoughts about Sanders in a tweet: “This man been fighting for equal rights, HUMAN rights for such a long time. Seeing this country become a better place been really his passion for a long time not a new front for a campaign.”

Last week, Sanders went on Jimmy Kimmel, who asked him what he thought about Cardi B. “What it means is that, what Cardi B does is not only is she an enormously popular entertainer what she is doing is speaking to young people about the important issues that are on their minds and I applaud that very much.”
This odd couple agrees on their diagnosis of the issues that affect Americans and seem to also agree on how to address them. Though he was a rather fringe political agent for much of his career, Sanders revolutionized the American political stage by bringing Democratic Socialist proposals to the mainstream when he campaigned against front runner Hillary Clinton in 2016. For the 2020 elections, Sanders is looking to connect with younger voters, particularly Gen Zers, many of which will vote for the first time. Interestingly enough, these voters are a rather “dark territory” in that its political inclinations are yet to be discovered.
@berniesandersWhat may seem like a mismatch is actually an alliance believed to rally young voters to the ballots “We (are) working on a way to involve more young people in the political process,” presidential hopeful told CNN in an interview as he arrived for the shoot. “The future of America depends on young people. They are voting in large numbers, but not large enough numbers.”
This unlikely pair met up at an unlikely spot, The Ten Nail Bar, a beauty salon in Detroit. On their Instagram account, the Bar thanked both Sanders and Cardi B “for sparking this conversation, while supporting a Detroit grown business. “We celebrate and encourage community conversations tackling issues that affect our nation as a whole.”

Cardi B then posted pictures of their encounter with a longer message. “Not me, US”, said the rapper, referencing Sanders’s campaign slogan. “Stay tuned to see how he will fight for economic, racial, and social justice for all. Together, let’s build a movement of young people to transform this country. LET’S LEARN OUR CANDIDATES!”
We can expect this video to come out soon, as Sanders continues to race for the Democratic nomination.
