Why September 10 Was Chosen for the Charlie Kirk Times Square Monument

On September 10, 2026, a bronze statue of Charlie Kirk will be unveiled in Times Square — exactly one year to the day after the Turning Point USA founder was assassinated. The monument, created by Italian sculptor Sergio Furnari, is not just a tribute to a conservative activist. The choice of date and location makes it something more pointed: a public declaration about legacy, martyrdom, and who gets to claim permanent space in American life.

The Date Was Never Just a Date

Kirk was k1lled on September 10, 2025, a Tuesday, in what prosecutors in Utah have described as a premeditated act by Tyler Robinson, then 23 years old. Investigators say video and DNA evidence against Robinson is overwhelming, and the case is moving forward through the courts. The exact circumstances and motive remain part of an active legal proceeding — but the date of Kirk’s death has already taken on a life of its own outside the courtroom.

Scheduling the Times Square unveiling on September 10, 2026 is a deliberate act of calendar symbolism. It transforms a date of loss into a date of defiance — the anniversary of an assassination becoming the birthday of a monument. That kind of move is as old as political memory itself: you take the wound and you build something on top of it so the wound never fully closes. Whether you think Kirk deserved that kind of permanence or not, the people commissioning this statue know exactly what they are doing with the calendar.

Times Square Is Not an Accident Either

Furnari, who has generated significant online attention with behind-the-scenes footage of the statue’s progress, is not a stranger to high-visibility public art. But the location here does as much work as the sculpture itself. Times Square is where America performs itself for the rest of the world — it is screens and crowds and noise and argument, all compressed into a few blocks in Midtown Manhattan. Placing a Kirk monument there is a statement that his brand of combative, public ideological debate belongs at the center of that performance, not at the margins.

It is worth noting that a separate memorial to Kirk already exists — or is in progress — at Ave Maria University in Florida, where Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz created a piece depicting Kirk in a spiritual embrace with Jesus. That image, aimed at a faith community, reads very differently from the Times Square installation, which is aimed at the news cycle and the cameras. Two monuments, two audiences, two versions of the same man.

The September 10 unveiling is expected to draw conservative leaders, young Republicans, and free-speech advocates — essentially, the Turning Point USA orbit paying its respects in the most public way possible. Whatever one thinks of Kirk’s politics, the spectacle will be impossible to ignore, which was almost certainly the point from the beginning.
