On July 23, 2025, a bizarre scene unfolded at a Chuck E. Cheese in Tallahassee, Florida, when a man dressed as the iconic mouse mascot was arrested mid-shift during a children’s birthday party. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Jermell Jarreau Jones, faces multiple felony charges related to credit card fraud.

What Led to the Arrest

The incident began with a customer noticing unauthorized charges — totaling around $100 — on her child support debit card, last used during her daughter’s birthday party at the restaurant on June 28. Through surveillance footage from local stores, she identified Jones as the user, prompting her to alert the police.

Police arrived at the Chuck E. Cheese location shortly before 6:30 p.m. local time and found Jones in full Chuck E. Cheese costume. According to the arrest report, officers originally planned to wait for a private moment but changed course when Jones resisted arrest, tensing up and refusing to cooperate. One officer reportedly said, “Chuck E, come with me, Chuck E.” Jones was handcuffed—still wearing the oversized mascot head—while families and children watched in shock.

 Evidence and Charges

Police recovered the stolen debit card and matching purchase receipts on Jones. He faces three felony charges: credit card theft, criminal use of personal identification, and fraudulent use of a credit card more than twice or over $100. Jones initially denied wrongdoing, claiming he found the card and intended to turn it in—but investigators say evidence proves otherwise. A small amount of marijuana was also found in his possession.

Jones was booked into Leon County Jail and later released on $1,000 bond the following morning.

Reactions and Fallout

The arrest sparked viral attention, with users across social media slamming law enforcement for conducting the arrest in costume while children were present. One critic wrote:

“Ok, Tallahassee Police Department, y’all couldn’t let this man change out of his Chuck E. Cheese costume before arresting him in front of those kids?”

Meanwhile, Chuck E. Cheese’s parent company, CEC Entertainment, acknowledged the incident and confirmed that it took “appropriate action” against the employee.
