The White House announced plans for a massive 90,000-square-foot ballroom in the East Wing, capable of hosting up to 650 guests. The estimated cost: $200 million, privately funded by Trump and undisclosed donors. The project will be designed by McCrery Architects, built by Clark Construction, and engineered by AECOM.

Construction is expected to start in September 2025 and finish before the end of Trump’s term in January 2029.The ballroom will occupy part of the East Wing, temporarily relocating the First Lady’s offices but without demolishing existing structures.Architectural experts and oversight commissions have warned that such large-scale changes typically require a lengthy approval process—yet no formal legal review has been filed.

In June and July 2025, the iconic Rose Garden’s grass was replaced with a paved stone and gravel surface, creating a plaza-like event space.

Trump claimed the change was for practical reasons, saying women in heels struggled on the lawn. Critics, however, decried the move as erasing an important piece of presidential history—originally designed in 1913 and famously redesigned in 1961 by Rachel Mellon.

A Gold Renovation Office

Trump’s Oval Office now features heavy gold accents—on furniture, vases, cherubs, and even a Trump family crest over the doorway—much of it brought from Mar-a-Lago.

The traditional “Oval Office Swedish ivy,” a living symbol of presidential continuity, has been replaced with ornate décor.

Trump has also filled the space with personal touches, including a portrait of himself raising a fist after an assassination attempt, maps renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” and a replica of the Declaration of Independence with no clear explanation.

Two massive flags now tower at each end of the White House lawn, an overtly grand display of nationalism.

Barack Obama’s official portrait was first moved from the main staircase to a side stairwell and later placed near private areas, out of public view.

Reactions and Implications

These renovations—maximalist, flashy, and deeply personal—have sparked heated public debate. Critics argue they undermine the symbolic integrity of the “People’s House,” transforming it into an extension of Trump’s private brand. Concerns center on the legality of bypassing standard approval channels, the lack of transparency in donor funding, and the preservation of the White House’s historic character.

Supporters counter that presidents have long altered the building—Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman made substantial changes—but note that past projects adhered to public processes and regulatory oversight.
