The story of Erik and Lyle Menéndez is once again making headlines. The brothers, who in 1989 murdered their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez, after years of alleged abuse, are about to face parole hearings this week. Erik’s hearing is scheduled for Thursday and Lyle’s for Friday.

Erik and Lyle Menéndez Could Soon Be Released from Prison

More than three decades after the crime that captivated television audiences and the U.S. judicial system, the possibility that both could regain their freedom is sparking a wide range of reactions. While some remain convinced that they should serve their full sentences, their family and a support group known as the Justice Coalition for Erik and Lyle argue that the brothers have changed and deserve a chance at release.

Through a statement released this week, the coalition—made up of family members who have publicly defended them over the past year—said they are “cautiously optimistic” about the upcoming hearings. They acknowledged, however, that the parole process in California is long, complex, and grueling.

Still, they emphasized that both Erik and Lyle are prepared to face the scrutiny and spectacle of appearing before a parole board. The coalition asserts that the brothers have shown significant personal growth during their more than 30 years in prison: they have fully accepted responsibility for the murders, expressed remorse multiple times, and have the support of prison officials who vouch for their behavior. In fact, the coalition noted that several of these officials—who had never previously intervened on behalf of other inmates—submitted positive recommendations in their files, which is seen as a major step toward their release.

“We know that Erik and Lyle will eventually leave prison; it’s almost inevitable after the modification of their sentences,” said the Menéndez family.

The Menéndez case, once thought closed, resurfaced on social media in 2023 when a letter Erik wrote to his cousin Andy Cano came to light, detailing the sexual abuse he allegedly suffered at the hands of his father. This document, which had been hidden for years, opened a new chapter in the story. The situation intensified further when Roy Rosselló, former member of the band Menudo, claimed he was also abused by José Menéndez.

With these revelations, the Justice Coalition for Erik and Lyle added new arguments in favor of the brothers, submitting official statements to the court and even drawing the attention of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has expressed interest in the case.

Authorities will evaluate not only the brothers’ criminal and prison records but also their ability to reintegrate into society after more than three decades behind bars. Meanwhile, the Menéndez family is preparing to support them through the process.
