Three deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were killed early Friday in a powerful explosion at the department’s Biscailuz Training Academy in East Los Angeles. Officials say the blast may have occurred during a training exercise involving explosives, but the cause remains under investigation as federal and local authorities continue to examine the scene.
How the Los Angeles Training Facility Explosion Unfolded
The explosion occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the Biscailuz Training Academy, located in the 1000 block of North Eastern Avenue. The facility is known for housing the department’s special enforcement units, including its bomb squad.
Preliminary information suggests that personnel were handling some form of explosives at the time of the blast. The incident is being treated as accidental, pending further investigation.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department, the LAPD bomb squad, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) all responded to the scene. LASD homicide detectives are also involved in the ongoing investigation.

Who Has Responded

Federal and local officials were quick to express condolences and confirm the deployment of investigative teams.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi acknowledged the incident in a post on social media:
“Our federal agents are at the scene and we are working to learn more. Please pray for the families of the sheriff’s deputies killed.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of next of kin.

Officials and Lawmakers React
Several L.A. County officials expressed heartbreak and concern following the incident, including Supervisors Hilda Solis, Kathryn Barger, and Janice Hahn.
“My heart goes out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the three individuals who lost their lives in what appears to have been a devastating explosion,” said Supervisor Solis, whose district includes the training facility.
Supervisor Hahn called it “an extraordinarily painful day” for the department and the county:
“We need to get to the bottom of what happened and make sure that it never happens again.”
Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the situation Friday morning. His Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local officials as the investigation continues.

What Comes Next
As of Friday afternoon, the identities of the fallen deputies had not been released, and it was unclear whether any other individuals were injured in the explosion.
Officials have not confirmed whether the blast was caused by a malfunction, mishandled equipment, or a failure in protocol. Investigators are expected to remain on-site through the weekend as they work to determine what went wrong.

The sheriff’s department has not announced whether training operations at the facility will be paused or relocated during the investigation.
