8 Freedom Flotilla Activists Still Detained After Trying to Bring Aid to Gaza and Being Seized at Sea

The Madleen never entered Israeli territory—at least not voluntarily. On June 9, the humanitarian aid ship bound for Gaza was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in international waters. Aboard were twelve international activists from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), whose mission was simple: break the blockade and deliver aid.

Instead, they were forcibly transferred into Israeli custody, a move legal advocates say constitutes a violation of both Israeli and international law. What followed was not diplomacy or negotiation, but isolation, threats of indefinite detention, and forced deportation.

The Freedom Flotilla 8: Who’s Still Being Held by Israel?

Of the twelve people aboard the Madleen, four have already been deported, including Greta Thunberg and Al Jazeera journalist Omar Faiad. The eight others remain detained, each now facing a legal process described by experts as arbitrary and illegitimate. The detained include:

  • Suayb Ordu (Turkey)

  • Mark van Rennes (Netherlands)

  • Pascal Maurieras, Reva Viard, Rima Hassan, and Yanis Mhamdi (France)

  • Thiago Ávila (Brazil)

  • Yasemin Acar (Germany)

Each has been issued a 100-year entry ban into Israel, despite never having chosen to enter the country in the first place.

A Legal Process Built on Denial

The detainees were all presented with two options: sign documents consenting to deportation, or remain in detention and appear before an Israeli tribunal. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition advised some to choose deportation in order to restore access to communication and amplify advocacy efforts. But all twelve refused to admit any wrongdoing and disputed Israel’s claim that they entered the country unlawfully.

According to legal representatives from Adalah—the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel—Israel lacks jurisdiction altogether.

“These individuals were kidnapped,” Adalah argued in court, “and their detention is both arbitrary and illegal under international law.”

They emphasized that the flotilla was seized in international waters, that the Gaza blockade itself constitutes collective punishment, and that the volunteers’ mission was explicitly humanitarian.

Inside the Detention Centers

Conditions in Israeli detention have been described as dire. Activists report bed bugs, unsanitary water, and aggressive intimidation tactics. Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila began a hunger and water strike at 4 a.m. on June 10. Others are reportedly in poor physical and psychological condition.

The system is designed not only to silence dissent but to exhaust resistance. Israeli authorities are relying on the 72-hour window afforded by its deportation procedures to pressure detainees into “voluntarily” leaving the country. Those who resist are subjected to tribunal hearings in a court system that rarely delivers justice—particularly not to those challenging the occupation.

The Broader System at Play

While international attention has focused on the Madleen 12, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition is clear: the activists’ privilege as foreign nationals has spared them the full violence of Israeli repression.

As of June 4, 2025, more than 10,400 Palestinians remain imprisoned in Israeli facilities, according to Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association. Over 400 are children. More than 3,500 are being held without trial, without charges, and without due process. What the Madleen activists face in days is what Palestinians face for years.

This moment isn’t an exception—it’s a glimpse into a system designed to normalize violence and criminalize solidarity.

What Comes Next

A decision from the tribunal is expected soon. Adalah’s legal team has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all eight remaining detainees, their safe return to the Madleen, and the continuation of their mission to Gaza.

But if history is any indication, Israel will order their forced expulsion and frame it as justice. The Flotilla Coalition, however, isn’t backing down.

“Our mission remains,” they said in a statement. “To break the siege. To deliver aid. And to expose the system for what it is.”

For now, eight international activists remain behind bars—detained not for what they did, but for what they dared to challenge.
