Indonesia is facing yet another tragedy following the eruption of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on the eastern side of Flores Island, located in the east of the country. According to the latest reports from emergency teams, nine people have lost their lives after the Indonesian volcano eruption.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency, which initially reported ten fatalities, updated its figure to nine in its latest bulletin, identifying the victims as five men and four women. Additionally, over 1,400 people have been evacuated from the affected areas.

In its initial report, the agency specified that the deceased were residents of Klantanlo, a village near the volcano. The first eruption occurred shortly before midnight on Sunday, lasting about 25 minutes, according to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

Following this eruption, which was followed by two additional blasts, authorities raised the alert level in the area to 4, the maximum level. Fallen trees and heavy ash have complicated access to the area. A seven-kilometer exclusion zone has been established around the 1,584-meter volcano, and authorities have warned of potential floods due to ongoing rainfall in the vicinity.

According to official data, seven towns, with a combined population of over 10,000 people, are located within this exclusion zone. “The community should remain calm and follow local authority instructions,” emphasized the agency, advising residents to wear face masks due to the health risks from ash.

In videos shared by the BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency), groups of people are seen boarding trucks to evacuate from nearby towns. Although exact figures are not yet available, a significant number of residents have had to leave their homes. A thick layer of ash covers several villages, where damage to buildings, some burned down, can be observed.

What Is the Pacific Ring of Fire?

Indonesia is home to more than 400 volcanoes, with at least 129 still active and 65 considered hazardous. In December 2023, the country suffered a tragic eruption of Mount Merapi on Sumatra Island, claiming 23 lives.

Another eruption in May left 60 dead after heavy rains swept volcanic material into nearby residential areas. Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly seismically and volcanically active area that experiences around 7,000 tremors annually, most of which are minor.

The “Ring of Fire” is a geologically active zone encircling the Pacific Ocean, known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It spans over 40,000 kilometers and includes countries across the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, such as Chile, Peru, Mexico, Japan, Indonesia, and New Zealand.

This activity results from tectonic plate collisions in the region, such as the Pacific Plate with the North American, Eurasian, and Australian plates. These movements generate friction, energy buildup, and eventual releases through earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.

This phenomenon makes the Ring of Fire one of the most geologically active areas globally and a crucial zone for studying and managing natural disasters.
