Actress Jane Fonda was arrested earlier today on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C., as she and many others took part in a protest against climate change.
A just cause
Dozens of protesters gathered in front of the iconic building to demand that lawmakers take definitive action to deal with the climate crisis currently plaguing the entire world, which Fonda rightly calls an “existential threat.”
“We have to be sure that the crisis that is climate change remains front and center like a ticking time bomb,” Fonda declared. “We don’t have very much time, and it’s really urgent.”
The 81-year-old actress recently moved to D.C. to join the fight against the crisis, pledging to hold weekly demonstrations (taking place every Friday) with shifting focus on different environmental issues.
“I will be on the Capitol every Friday, rain or shine, inspired and emboldened by the incredible movement our youth have created,” Fonda wrote on her website. “I can no longer stand by and let our elected officials ignore – and even worse – empower – the industries that are destroying our planet for profit. We can not continue to stand for this.”

Fire Drill Fridays
This time around, Fonda was protesting alongside the activist group Oil Change International in what she has termed “Fire Drill Fridays.”
“Today, the United States Capitol Police arrested 16 individuals for unlawfully demonstrating on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol,” the spokeswoman for the Capitol Police, Eva Malecki, said to The Hollywood Reporter.
The demonstrators were charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.
