Juliana marins fell into a volcano and survived—but the rescue delayed, and her family blames negligence

Juliana Marins was chasing sunrise.

It was early on June 21 when the 26-year-old Brazilian hiker slipped from a cliff on the rim of Mount Rinjani, a massive active volcano in Indonesia. She’d been making her way toward the summit—over 12,000 feet above sea level—when the fall left her stranded on a steep rock face, half a kilometer below the trail.

She was still alive.

Drone footage released later would show Juliana sitting upright, moving, waiting. But help never came. Not in time.

Four Days Too Late to Save Juliana Marins

For four excruciating days, rescue teams attempted to reach her. They cited bad weather, soft terrain, and thick fog. The Gunung Rinjani National Park described “extreme terrain with unpredictable weather.” But to Juliana’s family, none of those reasons were good enough.

“She suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,” her family posted on Instagram. “If the team had reached her within the estimated time of 7 hours, Juliana would still be alive.”

From Brazil to Lombok, the family watched in disbelief as the rescue operation stalled. On social media, they documented agonizing delays:

“A WHOLE DAY and they had advanced only 250m below. They were 350m away from Juliana and they retreated,” one post read. “WE NEED HELP. WE NEED THE RESCUE TO REACH JULIANA URGENTLY!”

By June 24, it was too late. The search team located her body and began the slow, treacherous process of recovering it from the cliff. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Desperate Plea for Accountability

Juliana’s family isn’t just grieving—they’re fighting.

In emotional posts and interviews, they’ve accused both the Indonesian rescue agencies and the Brazilian government of neglect, misinformation, and even manipulation. Her father, Manoel Marins, told reporters the Brazilian Embassy “is not helping us,” despite repeated requests.

“She is a 26-year-old girl, a Brazilian citizen, and no one—except family and friends—seems to care.”

Juliana’s sister, Marianna, went further, alleging that authorities doctored footage of the rescue and falsely claimed Juliana was receiving food and water.

“The Indonesian government is lying, and the embassy is not verifying the facts before informing us,” she said. “She is not receiving supplies.”

The search agency maintained that terrain and weather made access nearly impossible—but to the family, the video evidence of Juliana’s early movements only confirmed their worst fears: she could’ve been saved.

A Tourist’s Death, A Global Question

Mount Rinjani is no stranger to tragedy. Just weeks earlier, a Malaysian tourist died on the same slopes. The mountain’s extreme altitude and unpredictable terrain draw both adventurers and risk—but Juliana’s death raises deeper questions.

What responsibilities do governments have to citizens abroad in high-risk zones? How transparent are search and rescue operations when no one is watching? And when a tourist falls, quite literally, between the cracks—who answers for it?

“Don’t Give Up on Juliana”

On June 25, Juliana’s body was flown to Bhayangkara Hospital in Indonesia. Her father identified her remains. Meanwhile, her family continues to press for justice, posting with raw grief:

“Juliana deserved much more… Now we are going to seek justice for her, because that is what she deserves.”

In a world where Instagram posts have become public pleas, Juliana Marins’ final days weren’t just a tragedy. According to her family—they were preventable.
